What SLS actually is (and what it is doing in your soap)
Sodium lauryl sulfate — you will also see it written as SLS or sodium dodecyl sulfate — is a synthetic surfactant. Surfactants are molecules that grab onto oil at one end and water at the other, which is how they lift grease and grime off your skin and let the water rinse it away. SLS happens to be very good at this and very cheap to make, which is why it turns up in a huge share of foaming products: shampoos, shower gels, facial washes, toothpaste, and the hard "beauty bars" that look like soap but are not.
It is also the reason those products produce that thick, satisfying lather. Here is the uncomfortable part: lather is a marketing sensation, not a cleaning one. A bar can clean beautifully with almost no foam, and a bar can foam like a cappuccino while quietly dismantling your skin barrier. We have been trained to trust the bubbles, and SLS is the ingredient that delivers them most cheaply.
Does SLS cause cancer? The honest answer
No. This is one of the most persistent skincare myths on the internet, and it is worth clearing up plainly because fear is not a good reason to choose a product. SLS is not listed as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the U.S. National Toxicology Program, California's Proposition 65 list, the U.S. EPA, or the European Union. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review expert panel assessed SLS and concluded it is safe in products designed for brief use followed by thorough rinsing.
Where does the myth come from? Partly from confusion with a related ingredient, sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). SLES is made through a process called ethoxylation that can leave traces of 1,4-dioxane — a compound that is a genuine contamination concern — as a by-product. SLS is not made this way and is not associated with 1,4-dioxane, as the industry science summaries from the American Chemistry Council lay out. So if you are going to worry about SLS, worry about the right thing — and the right thing is not cancer.
What SLS really does to your skin
The real issue with SLS is irritation, and here the evidence is not a rumour — it is decades of dermatology research. SLS is so dependably irritating that it is the substance scientists reach for when they deliberately want to induce mild inflammation in a controlled way. In patch testing, SLS has been used for years as the reference irritant against which weaker reactions are judged, as documented in the Contact Dermatitis literature on irritant patch testing.
What happens on the skin itself? Studies measuring transepidermal water loss (TEWL) — essentially how much moisture leaks out through a damaged barrier — show that SLS produces a clear, dose-related rise in water loss and disrupts the organisation of the skin's protective lipid layers (see the multiparametric barrier work in the British Journal of Dermatology, and the barrier-recovery study in Contact Dermatitis). In plain terms: SLS can loosen the mortar between your skin cells, and a barrier that leaks water is a barrier that feels tight, dry, flaky and reactive.
An honest caveat, because it matters: most people rinse a cleanser off within seconds, and brief contact is far gentler than the sustained patch-test exposure used in labs. Not everyone who uses an SLS wash ends up with irritated skin. But if your skin is dry, sensitive, eczema-prone or simply "tight after washing," SLS is one of the first ingredients worth removing — and the research on why it feels that way is solid, not marketing.

This is the part almost nobody explains, and it is the whole reason tallow soap sits in a different category. There are two completely different ways to make something bar-shaped that you wash with.
Real soap is made by saponification: you combine a fat or oil (tallow, olive oil, coconut oil) with an alkali such as sodium hydroxide, and a chemical reaction turns the fat into soap. The by-product of that reaction is glycerin — a humectant that draws moisture into the skin. In traditional, small-batch soap that glycerin stays in the bar. In much industrial soap it is extracted and sold separately, because glycerin is worth more than the soap.
Syndet bars — short for "synthetic detergent" — contain no saponified fat at all. They are pressed from synthetic surfactants (SLS and its relatives among them). They look like soap and are often sold as "beauty bars" or "cleansing bars," but chemically they are closer to a solid shower gel than to a bar of real soap.
So when someone says "I don't use soap, I use a gentle bar," they may actually be using a detergent bar built around the very surfactants they are trying to avoid. The label rarely makes this obvious. If the ingredient list starts with things like sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium lauroyl isethionate or sodium cocoyl isethionate rather than saponified tallow/olive oil, it is a detergent bar, not soap.
Why tallow soap is different

The one honest caveat about all real soap
We would rather tell you this than have you read it somewhere else and feel misled. All true soap — tallow soap included — is naturally alkaline, sitting around pH 9–10, while healthy skin sits nearer pH 5.5. That higher pH is simply what the saponification reaction produces. For most skin this is a non-issue: contact is brief, you rinse, and the retained glycerin plus tallow's skin-like fats cushion the effect far better than a stripping detergent does. But if your skin is extremely reactive or you have a compromised acid mantle, the gentlest routine of all is our brand's original one — plain water to cleanse, tallow balm to nourish — with soap reserved for when you actually need to lift away sweat, sunscreen or grime. We would rather you use less and love it than use more and wonder.
Which is right for your skin type?
Dry skin: SLS is one of the worst offenders for that tight, papery post-wash feeling, because it raises water loss through the barrier. A glycerin-rich tallow bar cleanses without stripping, and following with tallow balm seals the moisture in.
Oily skin: It feels counter-intuitive, but harsh SLS cleansing can push oily skin to produce more oil to compensate for what was stripped. A gentle tallow bar cleans thoroughly without triggering that rebound, helping skin settle over time.
Sensitive skin: This is where the difference is most obvious. SLS is the literal laboratory standard for provoking irritation, so removing it is often the single most effective change a sensitive-skinned person can make. Tallow's skin-compatible lipids are about as calm as cleansing gets.

Mature skin: Older skin makes fewer of its own protective lipids, so it can least afford to have them stripped by detergents. A tallow bar replenishes rather than removes, leaving mature skin softer and more comfortable after washing.
How to switch without the drama
You do not need to overhaul anything. Finish the wash you have, or bin it if it stings — then simply use the tallow bar in the shower where your gel or beauty bar used to live. Wet, lather lightly between the hands, cleanse, rinse. Follow with a thin layer of tallow balm on damp skin while you are still in the bathroom. That is the entire routine. Give your skin two to three weeks: the tight, squeaky feeling fades first, then the flaking, and then the reactivity settles. Skin that has been over-cleaned for years takes a little while to trust that it is safe now.
