Frequently Asked Questions About Cold Process Tallow Soap

by Nana Latta on Dec 15, 2025
Frequently Asked Questions About Cold Process Tallow Soap

A cold-process tallow bar is the soap your skin would choose if it could: hard, mild, quietly creamy, and made without a single synthetic detergent. It takes four to six weeks of patient curing before it is ready, which is exactly why it feels so different from a supermarket bar. Here are the questions people actually ask us about it — the chemistry, the safety, the storage, and why the wait is worth it.

Tallow Minimalist Soap Bar, cold-processed and unscented, handmade in Belgium

Cured for weeks, not minutes

Tallow Minimalist Soap Bar

Cold-processed from Belgian grass-fed tallow and castor oil, then left to cure until it is hard, mild and long-lasting. Unscented by design — nothing added, nothing to react to. €12,90.

What is cold process soap?

Cold process soap is made by combining fats with lye (sodium hydroxide) at a relatively low temperature and letting the chemical reaction — saponification — complete on its own. Hot process soap is cooked to speed that up. Cold process is not: it is poured, left to set, and then cured for four to six weeks. That patience is the whole point. The bar hardens, excess water evaporates, and the result is milder, longer-lasting and better-lathering than anything rushed.

Is there still lye in the finished soap?

No. In a correctly formulated, fully cured bar, no lye remains. During saponification the lye reacts completely with the fats and is transformed into soap and glycerin — that is what soap is. This is precisely why the curing period matters: it guarantees the reaction has finished. There is no such thing as soap made without lye; there is only soap in which the lye is entirely used up.

Why tallow rather than plant oils?

A hard, lasting bar

Tallow makes a firm bar that does not turn to mush in the soap dish — one of the practical reasons it was the standard for centuries.

Creamy lather

Not the big airy foam of a detergent, but a dense, luxurious cream that rinses clean.

Skin-familiar

Its fatty-acid profile resembles human sebum, which is why it cleans without leaving skin stripped.

Naturally vitamin-rich

Grass-fed tallow carries vitamins A, D, E and K — present because the fat was never bleached or deodorised.

For the full story of why tallow made the best soap for most of human history, read The Power of Tallow in Soap.

Does cold process soap contain glycerin?

Yes, all of it. Glycerin is a natural by-product of saponification and a genuine humectant — it draws water to the skin. Handmade cold process soap keeps every bit of it in the bar. Many industrial soaps extract the glycerin to sell separately and then add synthetic moisturisers back in. Ours never leaves.

“Where ordinary soap often feels tight, especially on drier skin, that is not the case at all with the Tallow Soap Bar. It lathers lightly, cleans thoroughly, without drying out.”

Why is my tallow soap white or cream coloured?

Because nothing was added to make it otherwise. Tallow soap ranges from white to soft cream depending on the fat, and grass-fed tallow often carries a faint yellow tint from beta-carotene — a sign of quality rather than a flaw. We use no colourants, so the colour you see is exactly what the ingredients produced.

Why does natural soap lather less?

Commercial bars often contain synthetic foaming agents that generate a lot of bubbles and, for some people, a lot of irritation. Cold process soap produces a natural, creamy lather instead. Less foam is not less cleaning — foam volume and cleaning power are simply not the same thing.

Can I use it on my face?

Yes. Tallow's closeness to human sebum makes it well tolerated by most skin types, sensitive skin included. It lifts dirt and excess oil without drying the skin out. Use lukewarm water, pat dry rather than rub, and follow with a balm such as the Minimalist Butter while your skin is still slightly damp.

How should I store it?

A cold process bar rewards a little care. Keep it on a well-drained soap dish so water runs off, let it dry fully between uses, store spare bars somewhere cool and dry, and keep them out of direct sunlight. Treated that way, one bar lasts a remarkably long time — far longer than a bar left sitting in a puddle.

Why fragrance-free?

Because fragrance, natural or synthetic, is the single most common cause of reactions in skincare. Leaving it out means no risk of a fragrance allergy, a bar suitable for babies and children, nothing to clash with the rest of your routine, and the honest, mild scent of the tallow itself. For anyone who values simplicity, that is the whole appeal.

Which skin types does it suit?

Dry skin

Natural glycerin plus nourishing fats — you step out comfortable rather than tight.

Sensitive skin

Mild, unscented and free of the usual irritants. A short ingredient list is the point.

Oily skin

Cleans without stripping, which can settle rather than provoke oil production.

Eczema-prone skin

Gentle and non-irritating as daily care. Not a medical treatment — see a doctor for broken or painful skin.

Cured slowly, made by hand

Start with the bar

The simplest entry to tallow skincare — and the easiest thing to add a balm to afterwards.

Quick answers

What makes cold process tallow soap different from a regular bar?

It keeps its natural glycerin, carries the vitamins A, D, E and K of grass-fed tallow, and uses no synthetic detergents. The four-to-six-week cure produces a harder, milder bar than a commercially pressed one.

Is Nana Latta tallow soap tested on animals?

No. All our products comply with EU cosmetics regulation, which prohibits animal testing. The tallow itself is ethically sourced as a by-product of the Belgian food industry.

Can I use it if my skin is very sensitive or allergy-prone?

Fragrance-free tallow soap is one of the least provocative bar soaps available — no synthetic fragrance, no dyes, no preservatives. If you have a known allergy, check the full ingredient list and patch-test first.

How long does a bar last?

Months, if you let it dry between uses on a draining dish. A cured cold process bar is dense and hard, so it wears down slowly compared with a soft, freshly made or detergent-based bar.

Does cold process soap expire?

It does not spoil the way a water-based product does, but the fats can eventually oxidise. Store bars cool, dry and out of sunlight, and use them within about a year of purchase for the best experience.
