The verdict first: if the marks acne left behind are red or brown patches on otherwise smooth skin — and for most people they are — Tallow Butter Fancy Rose is the jar to reach for. It is the only cream we make that carries both bakuchiol and organic rosehip, the two ingredients in this catalogue with real published evidence behind fading discolouration. If your skin is still angry and reactive, start with Family Daisy and move up later. If you want the plainest possible barrier repair with nothing else in the jar, take the Minimalist Butter. And one honest line before you scroll: no cream, ours included, fills a pitted scar.

Our pick for post-acne marks
Tallow Butter Fancy Rose
Grass-fed Belgian tallow carrying bakuchiol and organic rosehip extract. It melts in like a second skin, feeds the barrier that acne treatment stripped, and works on tone quietly over the weeks. €36,90.

“Best skincare for your skin. This tallow will change your skin.”

Which jar for which kind of mark
Most people land here already holding three tabs open. Here is the short version, before the science. All three creams are built on the same grass-fed Belgian tallow, cold-rendered by a family business that has been doing it the natural way for over two hundred years. What separates them is what else is in the jar.

Fancy Rose · €36,90
Best for
Red or brown marks left behind after the spot itself has healed — the flat kind you can only see, not feel.
How it feels
Rich going on, then gone. A soft, unpowdered finish and no sting, even on skin that has been through a retinoid.
What it isn't
Fast. Bakuchiol and rosehip work over months, not days, and neither will lift a pitted or indented scar.
The verdict: the best jar we make for discolouration. Start here and give it a full season before you judge it.
Shop Fancy Rose
Family Daisy · €36,90
Best for
Skin still in the thick of it — reactive, flushed, sore from treatment. A face cream with chamomile and raspberry, suitable from age three.
How it feels
The softest landing of the three. Cushioned and calm, with the heat taken out of the day.
What it isn't
A mark-fading cream. There is no bakuchiol or rosehip here — it settles skin down, it does not work on tone. Not a body butter, and not for babies.
The verdict: calm first, actives later. If your skin is flaring, this is the honest starting point — new marks are the thing worth preventing.
Shop Family Daisy
Minimalist Butter · €28,90
Best for
Anyone who wants pure barrier repair with nothing else in the jar — fragrance-free, two ingredients, safe on eyes and lips.
How it feels
The plainest and calmest of the three. Skin comes home to itself and stays quiet.
What it isn't
Targeted. It feeds and rebuilds beautifully, but it carries no active that works on pigment or redness.
The verdict: the right choice if simplicity matters more to you than speed — or as the morning jar alongside Fancy Rose at night.

First, name the mark you actually have
This is the step almost every article skips, and it decides whether anything you buy will work. What people call "acne scars" is really three different things, and only two of them respond to skincare at all.
Red marks (PIE)
Post-inflammatory erythema: dilated capillaries left behind after inflammation. Press one and it briefly blanches white. Flat to the touch. Fades on its own — faster on a calm, well-fed barrier.
Brown marks (PIH)
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: extra melanin dropped by the inflammation. Also flat, also fades — but sunlight will hold it in place for months longer than it needs to.
True scars
Ice-pick, boxcar and rolling atrophic scars are dents in the collagen itself. You can feel them. No cream reaches them — these need a dermatologist.
The distinction matters enough that clinicians themselves disagree about it: one study found that even expert dermatologists diverge when grading acne-related pigmentation, often reading colour as erythema rather than hyperpigmentation, and vice versa (PubMed 25327447). Post-acne erythema in particular has its own body of literature and its own treatment logic (PubMed 35076997).
Here is the good news buried in that: the two kinds of mark that most people are looking at in the mirror are the two kinds that fade. What you are really doing with a cream is making it easier for your skin to finish that job — and, just as importantly, making sure no new spots arrive to restart the clock. Between 80% and 90% of people with acne develop some atrophic scarring at some point, and the single biggest lever on that is how quickly and calmly the inflammation is brought down in the first place (PubMed 30822364). Prevention is where skincare genuinely earns its place.
What tallow honestly does — and doesn't do
Let us be straight with you, because you will not get this from most tallow brands. There is no randomised controlled trial of leave-on beef tallow for acne, scarring, eczema or ageing. A 2025 cross-sectional analysis in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology went through the tallow claims circulating on social media and found them widespread and largely uncited (Almatroud et al., PMC12661468). We would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
What tallow is, beyond dispute, is a superb barrier-repairing emollient — and barrier repair is not a small thing when you are dealing with post-acne marks. Almost everyone with marks has arrived at them via acne treatment, and acne treatment is drying by design. Benzoyl peroxide and topical retinoids strip the barrier as they work; the resulting tightness and flaking is the single most common reason people abandon the treatment before it has done its job.
That is exactly where a good moisturiser stops being a nicety. In a clinical study of patients on oral isotretinoin or topical tretinoin, adding a moisturising cream measurably improved dryness, roughness and desquamation and made the treatment easier to stay on (PubMed 17373148). A barrier-restoring routine used alongside acne treatment produced significantly lower transepidermal water loss and, notably, lower inflammatory lesion counts (PubMed 37276158), and a 2025 real-world study of adjunctive dermocosmetic care found the same pattern of better tolerability and better outcomes (PubMed 39757973).
Read that chain backwards and the case for tallow becomes clear without any overclaiming. Fewer new inflamed spots means fewer new marks. A calm, intact barrier means the marks you already have fade on schedule instead of being repeatedly re-inflamed. Tallow's fatty-acid profile is unusually close to your own skin oil, which is why it absorbs rather than sitting on top — your skin reads it as something it already knows how to use.
The honest caveat: tallow is relatively high in oleic acid, and oleic acid can disrupt barrier lipids in some skin (PubMed 12520175). In practice most people do beautifully with it and find it balancing rather than clogging, but if your skin is reactive, patch-test on the jawline for a few nights before you commit.
Why Fancy Rose is the one we point at
Tallow is the carrier. What makes Fancy Rose the mark-fading choice is the two things riding in it — and both have published human data.
Bakuchiol. The best-known trial, a randomised, double-blind study of 44 patients published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2019, compared 0.5% bakuchiol against 0.5% retinol over twelve weeks. Both significantly decreased wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation, with no statistical difference between them — but the retinol group reported significantly more scaling and stinging (Dhaliwal et al., 2019). Hyperpigmentation is precisely the brown-mark problem. And on skin that has already been through months of acne treatment, "as effective, less irritating" is not a consolation prize — it is the whole point.
Rosehip. In a prospective study of 108 patients following cutaneous surgery, scars treated twice daily with pure rosehip seed oil showed markedly less erythema, less dyschromia and less atrophy than untreated controls at twelve weeks — 73% versus 50% free of erythema, and 63% versus 21% free of discolouration (Valerón-Almazán et al., 2015). Surgical scars are not acne marks, and we will not pretend they are. But it is real human data on exactly the two things you are trying to shift: redness and discolouration.
Neither of those is a promise. Both are more than any tallow brand quoting "vitamin A" at you has bothered to look up.
Why I only ever used tallow

Honestly, many things led me to tallow. I read about it, I heard about it, and I already knew it as a wonderful cooking fat — I had realised it was traditionally the number-one fat used for almost everything. I grew up around ghee and full-fat, whole food. So I went to a butcher, rendered tallow myself, and put it on my reactive, dry skin — and it went calm, like it had finally been given something it already knew how to use. It worked so well for me and my family that I couldn't keep it to myself.

Claim 10% offA routine that actually fades marks
Four steps, and only four. The whole reason tallow suits this job is that it does not ask you to build a ten-step routine on skin that is already irritated.
- Cleanse gently, once or twice a day. Nothing squeaky, nothing stripping. Our unscented Tallow Minimalist Soap Bar (€12,90) is two ingredients and leaves the skin soft rather than tight. Worth knowing honestly: all true soap sits at pH 9–10, so if your skin is very reactive, use it on the body and a lower-pH cleanser on the face.
- Moisturise on damp skin, morning and night. This is the step that does the work. Press a pea-sized amount of Fancy Rose in while your face is still slightly damp. If your skin is flaring, use Family Daisy instead until it settles, then switch.
- Cover up in daylight. This is the step people skip and then wonder why the brown marks stay. UV radiation drives post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and can flare acne itself; photoprotection measurably improves both (PubMed 36946555). Our Tallow Sun Balm (€39,90) is a tallow balm with 20% zinc oxide, made for the whole family. We have not put it through SPF testing, so we do not give it an SPF number — for deliberate hours in strong sun, use a tested sunscreen alongside shade and a hat.
- Leave the spots alone. The least glamorous advice on this page and the most effective. Picking is what turns a mark that would have faded into one that will not.
Give it eight to twelve weeks before you decide anything. Red and brown marks fade on the skin's own timetable, and every study cited on this page ran for twelve weeks or more for exactly that reason.
By skin type
Oily & acne-prone
Counter-intuitive but well established: stripping oily skin makes it worse. A little Fancy Rose goes further than you expect — start with half a pea.
Dry & flaking from treatment
The clearest win of all. Minimalist Butter morning, Fancy Rose night, and the flaking usually settles within a fortnight.
Sensitive & reactive
Start with Family Daisy, or the fragrance-free Minimalist Butter if any scent is a trigger. Add actives only once the skin is quiet.
Mature skin with old marks
Fancy Rose without hesitation — bakuchiol works on tone and fine lines in the same trial, so you are not choosing between the two.
We love our international clients 🌍
Reading from the US or Canada? You may already know tallow — it has had a huge resurgence there. This is the European version: grass-fed Belgian tallow, handmade under EU cosmetic law, which bans more than 1,700 substances outright and requires a qualified safety assessment before a product can be sold. That same law is why you will not find an unproven scar claim anywhere on our labels. We ship worldwide from Belgium, with free shipping available and prices shown in your own currency.

Frequently asked questions
Does tallow remove acne scars?
No cream removes a true atrophic scar — the ice-pick, boxcar or rolling kind you can feel with a fingertip. Those are collagen dents and they need a dermatologist. What tallow does help with is the flat red and brown marks left after a spot heals, by keeping the barrier calm so they fade on schedule and fewer new spots arrive. Our Fancy Rose adds bakuchiol and rosehip, which have published human data on discolouration.
Which Nana Latta cream is best for acne scars?
Fancy Rose, because it is the only one that carries both bakuchiol and organic rosehip. Family Daisy is the better starting point if your skin is still reactive, and the fragrance-free Minimalist Butter is the choice if you want barrier repair and nothing else.
Is there any clinical evidence for tallow itself?
Not directly. There are no randomised controlled trials of leave-on beef tallow for acne, scarring or ageing, and a 2025 analysis in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found tallow claims online to be largely uncited. The evidence that does exist is on its individual fatty acids and on the broader principle that barrier-supporting moisturisers improve acne-treatment tolerability and outcomes. We would rather say that plainly than repeat a statistic we cannot trace.
Will tallow clog my pores if I already have acne?
For most people, no. Tallow's fatty-acid profile is close enough to your own skin oil that it tends to absorb rather than sit on the surface, and many people with oily skin find it balancing. It is not universal, though — patch-test on the jawline for a few nights first if your skin is reactive.
How long before I see marks fade?
Think in seasons, not weeks. Red and brown marks fade on the skin's own timetable; the bakuchiol and rosehip studies cited above both ran twelve weeks. Give any routine eight to twelve weeks of consistent use before you judge it — and protect the skin from sun throughout, or you will keep resetting the clock.
Can I use tallow alongside my prescription acne treatment?
Usually yes, and it is often exactly what makes the treatment bearable — moisturising alongside tretinoin or isotretinoin measurably improves dryness and comfort. Apply the prescription first, let it absorb, then the cream. Check with the doctor who prescribed it if you are unsure.
