The verdict first: if the change you notice most is skin that looks thinner, drier and less bright than it did five years ago, Tallow Butter Fancy Rose is the jar to reach for — it is the only cream we make that carries bakuchiol, the one ingredient in this catalogue with published human data on wrinkles and tone. If what bothers you most is the itch, take the fragrance-free Minimalist Butter instead. And if the dryness has spread to your shins and forearms — it usually has — the Essential Body Butter is the one that matters most. One honest line before you scroll: no cream replaces oestrogen, and we will not pretend ours does.

“Best skincare for your skin. This tallow will change your skin.”

Which jar for which complaint
Most women arriving at this page are not looking for a lecture on oestrogen. They want to know which one to buy. So here it is, before the science. All three are built on the same grass-fed Belgian tallow, cold-rendered by a family business that has been doing it the natural way for over two hundred years. What separates them is what else is in the jar — and where on your body the problem actually is.

Fancy Rose · €36,90
Best for
The face, when the concern is crepiness, lost bounce, dullness and fine lines that arrived faster than you expected.
How it feels
Rich going on, then gone. A soft, unpowdered finish — and no sting on skin that has become quick to react.
What it isn't
Fragrance-free, or fast. It carries rosehip and bakuchiol, so it has a scent, and bakuchiol works over months rather than days.
The verdict: the best jar we make for menopausal facial skin. Start here and give it a full season before you judge it.

Minimalist Butter · €28,90
Best for
Itch, tightness and skin that has turned unpredictable. Two ingredients, no fragrance at all, safe on eyelids and lips.
How it feels
The plainest and calmest of the three. Skin comes home to itself and stays quiet — this is the one people use on their neck at 3am.
What it isn't
Targeted. It feeds and rebuilds beautifully, but it carries no active that works on tone or fine lines.
The verdict: the right first jar if the itch is the loudest symptom. Comfort before actives — you can always add Fancy Rose at night later.

Essential Body Butter · €28,90
Best for
The part almost every article forgets: shins, forearms, hands and back. Menopausal dryness is rarely only on the face.
How it feels
Whipped and rich, with lavender and frankincense. It sinks in rather than sitting greasy, and it lasts through the evening.
What it isn't
Fragrance-free, and not a face cream. If essential oils are a trigger for you, use the unscented Minimalist Butter on the body instead.
The verdict: the most under-bought jar we sell. If your shins flake in winter, this will do more for your daily comfort than any face cream.

What is actually happening to your skin
Here is the number that ought to be better known. In a survey of women attending a specialist menopause clinic, 100% reported at least one skin symptom — the commonest being itchiness (78%) and dry skin (76%). Nearly half had been treating those symptoms themselves without ever mentioning them to a doctor, and one participant summed the whole thing up: “Tried for about 18 months with various creams before realising it may be peri-menopause, no-one tells us!” (Salih et al., Post Reproductive Health 2025).
So if your skin has changed and nobody warned you: you are not imagining it, and you are very much not alone. Three things are going on underneath.
Collagen falls fast
Roughly 30% of dermal collagen is lost in the first five years after menopause, then about 2% a year after that. It tracks menopausal age, not birthdays — which is why it feels so sudden.
The barrier leaks
Post-menopausal skin carries lower levels of ceramides, and shorter ones. Ceramides are the mortar between your skin cells — less mortar, more water lost, more tightness and itch.
Your own oil stops
Sebum output declines through the first post-menopausal decade. The natural moisturiser you have had for free since puberty quietly switches off.
The collagen figure comes from a body of work begun by Brincat and colleagues at King's College Hospital, who found skin collagen and skin thickness declining in relation to menopausal age rather than chronological age (BJOG 1985), and is summarised with the 30% figure in a review of estrogen-deficient skin in the International Journal of Women's Dermatology (Rzepecki et al., PubMed 30997378). The ceramide finding is newer and more specific: a 2022 Scientific Reports study measured the stratum corneum lipid profile in pre-menopausal women, post-menopausal women, and post-menopausal women on HRT, and found the post-menopausal group had lower ceramide levels with shorter average chain length — changes that were not present in the HRT group (PubMed 36522440). The sebum decline through the first post-menopausal decade has been measured directly with a sebumeter in women on and off HRT (PubMed 11834844).
Read those three together and the shape of the problem becomes obvious. Your skin is losing structure, losing the lipids that hold water in, and losing the oil that used to top them up. Which is precisely why the moisturiser that worked at 35 stops being enough at 52 — it was designed for skin that was still making its own.
What tallow honestly does — and doesn't do
Let us be straight with you, because you will not get this from most tallow brands. There is no randomised controlled trial of leave-on beef tallow for menopausal skin, ageing, dryness or anything else. A 2025 cross-sectional analysis in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology went through the tallow claims circulating on social media and found them widespread, largely uncited, and overwhelmingly attached to a financial interest (Almatroud et al., PMC12661468). We would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
What tallow is, beyond dispute, is an exceptional barrier-repairing emollient — and barrier repair is the exact thing menopausal skin has stopped doing for itself. Tallow's fatty-acid profile is unusually close to your own skin oil, which is why it absorbs rather than sitting on top; your skin reads it as something it already knows how to use. When your sebaceous glands are winding down, giving skin back a lipid it recognises is not a marketing idea. It is simply the most direct answer available to the problem you actually have.
Two honest caveats, stated once. First: tallow is relatively high in oleic acid, and oleic acid can disturb barrier lipids in some skin (PubMed 12520175). In practice most women find it the opposite of irritating, but if your skin has become reactive — and menopausal skin often does — patch-test along the jawline for a few nights first. Second, and more important: no topical cream restores oestrogen. Systemic HRT and prescription topical oestrogen are medical decisions with real evidence behind them and real considerations attached, and they belong in a conversation with your doctor. A cream works on comfort, on the barrier, and on the surface. That is a genuinely worthwhile job. It is not the same job.
Why Fancy Rose is the one we point at
Tallow is the carrier. What makes Fancy Rose the menopausal-skin choice is what rides in it.
Bakuchiol. The best-known trial is a randomised, double-blind study of 44 patients published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2019, comparing 0.5% bakuchiol against 0.5% retinol over twelve weeks. Both significantly decreased wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation, with no statistical difference between them — but the retinol group reported significantly more facial scaling and stinging (Dhaliwal et al., 2019). On skin that has become thinner, drier and quicker to react, “as effective, better tolerated” is not a consolation prize. It is the entire point. Retinol is the standard recommendation for midlife skin and it is a good one — but it is also the reason a great many women give up on midlife skincare altogether.
Rosehip. Organic rosehip extract brings its own antioxidant and tone-evening reputation, and it sits alongside the bakuchiol rather than competing with it. We will be honest that the strongest published rosehip data concerns post-surgical scars rather than menopausal skin, so treat it as a well-chosen supporting ingredient, not the headline.
And beneath both, the tallow does the unglamorous work: putting back the lipid film your own glands have stopped producing, so everything you apply on top has an intact surface to work on.
Ageing, honestly

Like most women over 40, I have stopped counting the years. I feel lucky to have found healthy food, non-toxic living and pure natural skincare back in my thirties — and I never felt I needed a complicated routine to keep my skin youthful and glowing. People always ask me for my tips, and honestly, Nana Latta only exists because tallow worked so well for me and my family that I couldn't keep it to myself. I have used only tallow for eight years now: always smooth, well-hydrated skin, and the easiest routine you can imagine. Of course nutrition and genes play their part too — but I can't deny how big a role tallow has played for me.

Claim 10% offA routine that suits menopausal skin
Four steps, and only four. The whole reason tallow suits this stage of life is that it does not ask you to build a ten-step routine on skin that has become less tolerant, not more.
- Cleanse gently, and less often than you think. Skin that no longer makes much oil does not need stripping twice a day. Our unscented Tallow Minimalist Soap Bar (€12,90) is two ingredients and leaves skin soft rather than tight. Honestly: all true soap sits at pH 9–10, so if your face has become very reactive, keep the bar for the body and use a lower-pH cleanser above the neck.
- Moisturise on damp skin, morning and night. This is the step that does the work, and damp is the part people skip. Press a pea-sized amount of Fancy Rose into your face, neck and décolleté while the skin is still slightly wet. If itch is your main complaint, use the fragrance-free Minimalist Butter instead.
- Do not stop at the jawline. Shins, forearms, hands and back are where menopausal dryness shows up worst and gets treated least. Essential Body Butter Lavender & Frankincense (€28,90) straight after a bath or shower, while you are still damp. For a slower evening version, a Magnesium + Salt Foaming Bath (€28,90) first, then the butter.
- Cover up in daylight. Thinner skin shows sun damage more readily, and pigment that arrives now takes longer to leave. Our Tallow Sun Balm (€39,90) is a tallow balm with 20% zinc oxide, made for the whole family. We have not put it through SPF testing, so we give it no SPF number — for deliberate hours in strong sun, use a tested sunscreen alongside shade and a hat.
Give it eight to twelve weeks before you decide anything. The bakuchiol trial ran twelve weeks; barrier repair takes a few weeks on its own. Skin at this stage rewards consistency far more than it rewards novelty.
By skin type
Dry and tight all day
The clearest win. Fancy Rose on damp skin morning and night, Essential Body Butter after every shower.
Itchy, especially at night
Start with the fragrance-free Minimalist Butter and keep the jar by the bed. Add actives only once the itch has settled.
Newly reactive or flushing
Fragrance is the first thing to remove. The Minimalist Butter is two ingredients and nothing else — see our rosacea guide if flushing is new.
Still breaking out at 50
More common than anyone admits. Do not strip it — a little Fancy Rose goes further than you expect. Start with half a pea.
We love our international clients 🌍
Reading from the US or Canada? You may already know tallow — it has had a huge resurgence there. This is the European version: grass-fed Belgian tallow, handmade under EU cosmetic law, which bans more than 1,700 substances outright and requires a qualified safety assessment before a product can be sold. That same law is why you will not find an anti-ageing miracle claim anywhere on our labels. We ship worldwide from Belgium, with free shipping available and prices shown in your own currency.

Frequently asked questions
Which cream is best for menopausal skin?
For the face, Fancy Rose — it is the only cream we make carrying bakuchiol, which has published human data on wrinkles and pigmentation and is better tolerated than retinol. If itch rather than ageing is your main complaint, choose the fragrance-free Minimalist Butter. For the dryness on shins, arms and hands, the Essential Body Butter matters more than any face cream.
Why has my skin suddenly become so dry and itchy?
Falling oestrogen changes three things at once: collagen drops sharply in the first years after menopause, the stratum corneum carries fewer and shorter ceramides so it holds water less well, and sebum output declines through the first post-menopausal decade. In one menopause-clinic survey every single respondent reported at least one skin symptom, with itch at 78% and dry skin at 76%. It is extremely common and it is rarely mentioned in advance.
Is tallow good for mature skin?
It suits it particularly well, for a straightforward reason: menopausal skin has stopped making enough of its own lipids, and tallow's fatty-acid profile is close to human sebum, so it absorbs rather than sitting on the surface. We should be clear that there are no randomised controlled trials of leave-on beef tallow for ageing — a 2025 review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found online tallow claims to be largely uncited. The case for it rests on what it is (an outstanding barrier emollient) rather than on a trial we can point to.
Is bakuchiol better than retinol for menopausal skin?
Not better — comparable, and gentler. In the 2019 British Journal of Dermatology trial, bakuchiol and retinol both significantly reduced wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation with no statistical difference between them, while the retinol group reported significantly more scaling and stinging. On skin that has become thinner and quicker to react, tolerability is often what decides whether you actually keep using something.
Will a cream replace HRT?
No, and we will not suggest otherwise. Systemic HRT and prescription topical oestrogen work on the underlying hormonal cause and are medical decisions for you and your doctor. A cream works on the barrier, on comfort and on the surface. Many women do both; the two are not in competition.
Can I use tallow on my neck, chest and eyelids?
Yes — and the neck and décolleté are exactly where menopausal thinning shows first and gets moisturised least. Extend every application downwards. For eyelids, use the fragrance-free Minimalist Butter, which is two ingredients and safe around the eyes and on the lips.
