Short answer: baby skin is up to 30% thinner and more absorbent than adult skin, so the safest care is the simplest — a pure, fragrance-free, essential-oil-free tallow balm whose fatty-acid profile mirrors the skin's own oil. Use a small amount on clean skin, always patch-test first, and check with your pediatrician for any persistent rash or condition.
The delicate reality of baby skin
When a baby enters the world, their skin is in a remarkable state of development — thinner, more permeable and far more sensitive than adult skin, designed to adapt and strengthen over time. That natural process deserves respect and restraint. At Nana Latta we believe less is more for baby skincare, which is why our purest tallow formulas are made without essential oils, fragrance or unnecessary additives — just pure, nourishing ingredients that work in harmony with your baby's skin.
When I was pregnant, I became so conscious of what I was putting on my baby's skin. It looked so fragile and soft — I couldn't imagine that those plastic bottles full of unreadable ingredients belonged anywhere near it. That's when I switched to only natural skincare myself. It was impossible to find here, so I ordered it online from a small natural-skincare company in the US — mostly soaps and a few salves. Just a few years later, I was making my own tallow balm from tallow I rendered myself. — Laura, founder
Why we don't use essential oils in baby products
Essential oils are often celebrated for their properties, and we use them thoughtfully in many adult products. For babies, we take a different approach:
- Skin sensitivity: baby skin is up to 30% thinner than adult skin and far more absorbent — even diluted essential oils can be too potent for delicate systems.
- Developing immune systems: babies are still building their natural defences; introducing complex botanical compounds too early can raise the risk of sensitivities.
- Respiratory considerations: strong scents, even natural ones, can be overwhelming for tiny airways and developing senses.
- Unnecessary complexity: baby skin doesn't need "active" ingredients to thrive — it needs gentle protection, hydration and time.
The power of pure tallow
Our purest range is built on a single, powerful ingredient: grass-fed beef tallow. Tallow is uniquely compatible with human skin because it mirrors the fatty-acid profile of our own sebum, and it's rich in vitamins A, D, E and K that support the skin barrier and moisture retention. For babies, that means deep hydration without irritation, support for the skin's natural protective barrier, gentle nourishment that doesn't interfere with development, and no synthetic chemicals, fragrances or common added allergens. As with any product, patch-test a small area first.

Caring for your baby's skin is about more than products — it's a foundation for lifelong skin health. We advocate for minimal intervention (let the skin find its own balance), pure ingredients with short, transparent lists, gentle routines (less frequent bathing, more skin-to-skin contact) and patience with the natural process.

Frequently asked questions
From what age can I use tallow on my baby's skin?
Our fragrance-free, essential-oil-free options — the Minimalist Butter, Minimalist Soap Bar and Sun Balm — are approved for babies and gentle enough to use from birth, because tallow mirrors the fatty-acid profile of human sebum. (Our chamomile Family Daisy butter is assessed for ages 3 and up.) Always patch-test a small area first, especially with newborns.
Are essential oils safe for babies?
We don't recommend essential oils for babies under 6 months. Baby skin is up to 30% thinner than adult skin and absorbs substances much more readily, so even oils that are safe for adults can be too strong. Our baby-approved products contain no essential oils at all.
What is the safest natural moisturiser for baby skin?
A pure, minimally formulated tallow balm — without water, synthetic preservatives, fragrance or essential oils, like our unscented Minimalist Butter — is one of the gentlest options for baby skin. Its compatibility with human skin means it absorbs naturally without disrupting the developing barrier.
Does tallow have any smell?
Our baby-approved tallow products are virtually odourless. The tallow is cold-processed and carefully purified to remove any animal scent, and our fragrance-free butter contains no added scent of any kind.
Can I use tallow on baby dry patches?
Many parents use pure, fragrance-free tallow for baby dry patches and cradle cap, and its vitamins A, D, E and K help support and protect the skin barrier, which is often compromised in these conditions. Tallow is a gentle moisturiser, not a medical treatment — always patch-test first and consult your pediatrician for eczema or any rash that persists or worsens.
