What tallow is, and why it works
Tallow is a natural, food-grade fat from grass-fed cattle, gently purified into a deeply nourishing skincare ingredient. At Nana Latta we love it for its ancestral roots and for what it does: it hydrates without clogging most people's pores, supports the skin barrier and works alongside your skin's own repair processes. It is one of the most complete ingredients you can use on its own.
A very old skincare secret
Tallow has looked after skin for millennia. From Roman bathhouses to Victorian beauty rituals, animal fats were the foundation of natural skincare. In ancient Egypt they kept skin soft in desert air; in Northern Europe, tallow and lard protected faces and hands through harsh winters.
It was only when synthetic ingredients took over in the 20th century that these traditions were set aside, driven by industrial cost and scale. What is striking is how many unrelated cultures arrived at the same answer: the Inuit used seal and caribou fat in the Arctic, where no plant oils exist at all, while European apothecaries built salves on tallow and lard for centuries. When people who never met each other all reach for the same fat, something real is being passed down.
What is in tallow
Tallow is rich in fatty acids that mirror the lipids of human skin: palmitic, stearic and oleic acid. They support barrier function and help limit moisture loss, and because they resemble what your skin already makes, they tend to be absorbed rather than sit on the surface. It also carries the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.
Each fatty acid has its own job. Stearic acid has a mild anti-inflammatory effect, part of why tallow moisturisers are often reported to calm redness. Palmitic acid is the most abundant fatty acid in human sebum, which helps explain why skin recognises and absorbs it. Oleic acid helps other lipids travel deeper. It is the balance of all three, rather than an overload of any single one, that sets tallow apart from an oleic-heavy oil like olive oil.
The vitamins add a second layer. Vitamin A (retinol precursors) belongs to the same family as prescription retinoids and is one of the best-studied compounds for supporting cell turnover, delivered here in its natural, gentle form. Vitamin E is a well-documented antioxidant.

Tallow vs. plant-based moisturisers
Tallow absorbs without the greasy residue some plant oils leave, and its closeness to human sebum is a big part of why. Plant oils have their place too: jojoba is a genuinely close match to sebum, which is exactly why we pair it with tallow in the Minimalist Butter. What matters is how a fat is built relative to your skin's own chemistry, not "animal versus plant". If you are used to a water-based moisturiser, the texture takes a moment to love. A pea-sized amount goes further than you would think: tallow is concentrated, and a thin layer is enough for the whole face. Warm it between your fingertips so it spreads evenly. It can be your whole routine or your final step, with nothing needed underneath, because its job is to seal in moisture and support the barrier. Give it two to four weeks. Common myths about tallow
"Tallow clogs pores." This comes largely from the comedogenic scale itself, built decades ago on a rabbit-ear model that predicts human skin poorly. Purified tallow scores low-to-moderate, comparable to jojoba, and skin tends to recognise it rather than wall it off.
"Tallow smells bad." Smell comes down to how it was rendered. Fat processed at high heat can smell meaty. Properly cold-processed tallow from clean suet is close to odourless, which is exactly how ours is made.
"Tallow is only for dry skin." Its richness makes it a natural fit for dryness, so that is what people talk about most. But the same barrier-friendly fats mean it does not trigger the oil-overproduction cycle that makes oily and acne-prone skin worse over time, which is why it appears across the skin types above.
"Tallow is outdated." Outdated means something better replaced it. What really happened is that synthetic, petroleum-derived ingredients became far cheaper at industrial scale in the mid-20th century. Tallow never stopped working. It stopped being the cheapest option for mass manufacturers.
Where our tallow comes from
Tallow is a by-product of the beef industry, fat that would otherwise be discarded. Using it in skincare does not require raising additional animals. It makes use of something that already exists, which makes it one of the most low-waste choices in natural skincare.
Our tallow is grass-fed and cold-rendered by a Belgian family business that has worked with fats since the 19th century: a true Belgian tradition, passed down from generation to generation for two centuries. It is food-grade and halal-certified, purified with natural clay, with no chemical bleaching. Grass-fed tallow tends to carry more monounsaturated fat and a higher concentration of fat-soluble vitamins than grain-fed, since diet shapes the fat. Cold rendering keeps more of that goodness and avoids the meaty smell high-heat processing leaves behind.
