Short answer: chamomile is one of the gentlest ways to calm skin that flushes, stings or flares. Its natural compounds — apigenin and bisabolol — are well-documented anti-inflammatories, and apigenin also helps soften the look of uneven tone for a brighter, more even complexion. It's the reason chamomile sits at the heart of our calmest balm, Tallow Butter Family Daisy. If your skin reacts to almost everything, this is the ingredient to reach for.
When I was a child, I remember rubbing chamomile flowers on scratches and scrapes — a simple remedy passed down through generations. It was the inspiration behind our very first tallow balm. Chamomile was the first ingredient that came to mind: tradition and gentle, natural skincare in one.
The science behind chamomile
Chamomile has been a trusted remedy for centuries — our great-grandmothers used chamomile rinses to brighten hair and chamomile poultices to calm wounds and rashes. Modern analysis explains why it endured. A study on Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) identified 32 active metabolites, including flavonoids, sesquiterpenoids and polar fatty acids, and the extracts showed significant antioxidant and skin-brightening activity. Its best-known compound, bisabolol, is one of the more thoroughly documented anti-inflammatory ingredients in cosmetic chemistry.
Why the extraction method matters
Not all chamomile is equal. CO2 extraction — the method we favour for delicate botanicals — preserves a broader spectrum of chamomile's active compounds than standard steam distillation, which means a more concentrated, effective ingredient from a smaller amount. It's a small detail that makes a real difference in how calm your skin feels after use.
Chamomile for sensitive, reactive skin
If your skin reddens in the cold, stings after cleansing, or flares without warning, chamomile is a gentle place to start. Its anti-inflammatory compounds calm the visible redness that comes with reactive and eczema-prone skin, while the tallow base repairs and seals the barrier so irritation has less chance to return. In our Family Daisy balm, chamomile is paired with omega-rich raspberry extract, prebiotic rice and grass-fed tallow — a short list, no synthetic fragrance, nothing to provoke a reaction. Frequently asked questions
What is chamomile extract and why is it used in skincare?
Chamomile extract is derived from chamomile flowers and is rich in flavonoids and antioxidants. In skincare it's valued for its brightening, soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it ideal for sensitive, reactive and dull-looking skin.
Does chamomile brighten skin?
The compound apigenin in chamomile helps inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme that triggers melanin production, so regular use can support a brighter, more even-looking complexion over time. Results are gradual and vary from person to person.
Is chamomile good for acne-prone skin?
Chamomile's anti-inflammatory properties help calm the redness and irritation that come with breakouts, without stripping the skin. In a tallow base it soothes while supporting the skin barrier — patch-test first if your skin is very reactive.

Our Tallow Butter Family Daisy is formulated with calming chamomile and omega-rich raspberry extract, in a base of grass-fed beef tallow, apricot kernel and jojoba oils, and prebiotic rice. It's suitable for sensitive and eczema-prone skin, and gentle enough for children from age three.
